One thing was obvious this week on ‘American Idol’: the judges have influence. They were transparent last night about who they thought was the weakest of final-five contestant. America listened to them. Janelle Arthur was sent home. She didn’t earn the assistance of the one judge save.
The girls sang a fun mix of songs by mega-diva Donna Summer before they results were shared. Ryan didn’t give results throughout the show, but rather he called the final five up one at a time to play what Jimmy had to say about each of their performances.
Angie, who gave two strong performances still recieved some tough words from Jimmy who said she is technically perfect but still lacks believability when she’s not behind the piano. Nicki said, “Jimmy has no idea what he’s talking about.”
Jimmy said of “Straight Up”, which Candice killed last night, “She blew my mind. Not only is she a great singer but she’s really smart.” Ryan asked Randy what Paula Abdul thought of the performance. Randy said he tried everything to find her to ask – called, texted and tweeted– but said that she was avoiding him. Then Paula walked out to greet Candice and then headed to the judges table to say hello.
Here’s where things got awkward. Everyone stood to hug Paula and we all had to see Nicki’s flimsy thong sticking out the top of her jeans. Paula sat between Mariah and Nicki and Ryan said, “There’s an image I can scratch off my bucket-list.” Did he mean the thong or the three women sitting side-by-side?
Idol runner-up from a decade ago, Clay Aiken, sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
Janelle didn’t get great reviews from Jimmy. He said right diva, wrong song and about her and “We got a strikeout.” Dolly didn’t come out on stage, but sent a special note to Janelle commending her performance.
Jimmy couldn’t say enough kind words about Amber. He complimented her bravery for singing big, bold songs and said she killed them both. “She jumped out of a plane without a parachute…she owned it.”
Kree got great reviews from the judges last night but Jimmy felt she made weak song choices. He was more enthusiastic about the Nicki-Mariah bickering and laughed about how Keith and Randy just stared blankly as they fought.
Ryan took a little walk down memory lane, showing the results from the night that Jennifer Hudson, Latoya London and Fantasia landed in the bottom three. Jennifer went home and Fantasia won. Jennifer looked blindsided and a little angry in the clips shown.
Then it was back to real time results:
Candice was called safe first. Then it was Angie and Amber who learned they lived to see another week. Kree and Janelle were bottom two, but it was Janelle who had to sing for her life.
What did you think of the results of last night?
